Never have I been more inclined to dislike a book. The size and scale of Ken Follett’s first contemporary thriller for more than a decade is not only daunting but Follett also pretentiously hopes “it transcends the thriller genre in the way that The Godfather transcended the genre of the crime novel”. But, from the moment I read the first page, I could not put it down.
