In a partnership between PC and smartphone maker Lenovo and educational technology company ConveGenius, the new CG Slate tablet has been launched for use by children in India and is expected to be sold exclusively on the e-commerce platform Flipkart.

The CG Slate is an NCERT curriculum-mapped, self-learning tablet for children that the companies believe will help to motivate young learners and allow them to enjoy the process of learning while at the same time helping them to stay focused on the task at hand.  Previously only offered to ConveGenius’ B2B clients, which include State Governments, NGOs, and other learning centers located in India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, the device is now available to the public at a cost of Rs 8,499 ($ 126) alongside a Rs 1,000 ($ 15) early-bird discount.

The device, which runs Android Lollipop out-of-the-box, features a seven inch WSVGA IPS display and 1024 x 600 pixel resolution. It is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT8127 processor and is equipped with 1GB RAM. It also offers 8GB of built-in storage, which can be increased to up to 32GB through the use of a microSD card. The tablet also comes with a 2MP rear camera and a 0.3MP front camera.  It weighs in at just over 9 ounces.

The tablet uses a “gamified” approach to learning, offering children the chance to feel like they are part of the game while learning important concepts through interactive books, videos, stories, and worksheets.

The device uses a Learn-Play-Shop approach that pushes children to self-learn without parental help.  Points are scored as children learn, which can then be redeemed to watch cartoons or play games, among other things.  Children will also be able to select toys and place them on a wish list that will then be available for purchase by their parents using cash-backs connected to the child’s account.

Parents can also use the device through a root password that enables them to make use of all the features of a standard tablet.

An additional feature is the mascot Titu, who guides children through the learning process and makes personalized recommendations along the way based on the learning needs of each child.

“CG Slate is an affordable and comprehensive mobile learning solution, which uses the immense potential of gamification to personalise learning for kids, and supplements regular curricula taught in school with NCERT-mapped content. We are positive that CG Slate’s interactive lessons, games, videos and movies will enrich the overall learning experience of the young generation, and would be a real aid for parents,” said Jairaj Bhattacharya, MD, Convegenius Group during the launch of the tablet.

Bhaskar Choudhuri, Director of Marketing at Lenovo, added that tablet technology has changed the world of education through its ability to allow young learners to use the touch-screen interface to access various digital resources.
