‘I was shot in the neck and paralysed in Afghanistan – but now I see I’m the lucky one’

On Sunday, ex-special forces soldier Toby Gutteridge will celebrate Remembrance Sunday at the base where he served in the Special Boat Service before he was wounded during his second tour of Afghanistan in 2009 and paralysed from the neck down. Despite devastating injuries caused when a 7.62mm high-calibre bullet shattered his spinal column, the 37-year-old considers himself lucky to be alive.
