Hollywood Figured Out How to Make Us Care About a Men in Black Spinoff—Put Tessa Thompson in It

LOS ANGELES, CA - FEBRUARY 28: Tessa Thompson, wearing Chanel, attends a Chanel Party to celebrate the Chanel Beauty House and @WELOVECOCO at Chanel Beauty House on February 28, 2018 in Los Angeles, California.

We’ve known that there was a Men in Black spinoff trilogy in the works since 2015, and have also known for about that long that the new trilogy would feature a prominent “woman in black.” Cut to 2018, when we know that Chris Hemsworth was cast as one of the spinoff’s leads. Today, we’ve received word that the “woman in black” will be none other than TMS’ Queen, Tessa Thompson.

That’s right! Valkyrie and Thor will be teaming up again to do a different kind of world-saving. According to The Hollywood Reporter, director F. Gary Gray (Fate of the Furious) is set to helm the film, with a script from Iron Man screenwriters Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. It’s set for a June 14, 2019 release.

I’ve gotta say, the Men in Black series was not one that I had a powerful yearning to see again. Don’t get me wrong, the original films were lots of fun, but they’re done now, and they’re not the kind of thing that necessarily needs to be looked at through a modern lens. Then again, this will be giving an amazing actress the chance to take on an action role, and both Thompson and Hemsworth are surprisingly amazing at comedy. I’d be curious to see their dynamic in a film like this.

There’s no word yet on plot, though THR reports that “sources say the new project is more of an ensemble piece than a two-hander and will be more global in scope.” So, I guess we shouldn’t expect Thompson and Hemsworth to so neatly fit into the template left behind by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.

What do you think? Are you excited to see Tessa Thompson take this on? Are you down for a new MiB trilogy? Tell us below!
