Game Over, Man: Ridley Scott Says Aliens 5 Just Isn’t Happening Anymore

To fans waiting for that Neill Blomkamp sequel to Aliens: I’m sorry, but it’s game over for you.

Ridley Scott made it clear in a chat with French film blog Allocine that Blomkamp’s sequel won’t actually be coming out at all. Comic Book Resources’ translation of the relevant soundbite has Scott saying, “There was never a scenario, just an idea that evolved into a pitch of 10 pages, I had to participate as a producer but it did not go any further because the Fox decided that [it] did not want to do it.”

It’s disappointing, to be sure, but honestly this all felt somewhat inevitable. Way back in August of 2015, Scott said he’s putting a pin in Aliens 5 in order to direct Prometheus 2. About a month after that, he said he’s actually got three more Prometheus films coming down the pipe (… five by five). With each delay, hope flickered, and despite Blomkamp and the original cast all voicing their support for the project, it seems that ultimately it was a studio decision to nuke the project.

I’m not one to give up hope (especially when it comes to Aliens movies), so there’s maybe a tiny part of myself that’s holding out for something down the line that isn’t a Prometheus film. There’s just something about a renewed Aliens franchise that gets me all excited. Don’t forget: Blomkamp’s project would have picked up directly after Aliens (which was itself the second film in the franchise), effectively ignoring Aliens 3 and Alien: Resurrection. Each of those films had their high points and all, but in the end, Ripley deserved better, I think. Same goes for Newt and Hicks (and yeah, even Jonesy).

Until then, however, we’ve got Alien: Covenant to look forward to.
