Education technology company Edgenuity has acquired fellow software company Compass Learning, which has been in business for more than 40 years.

Edgenuity of Scottsdale, Arizona creates online and blended learning solution for grades 6-12. Its online curriculum and services (which include NCAA-approved virtual courses, test preparation, and intervention) are used in eight out of the top ten school districts in the US.

Compass Learning, based in Austin, Texas, is an education software provider that focuses on grades K-8. According to its website, the programs Compass Learning offers include blended learning, interventions for struggling learners, college and career readiness, inquiry-based learning, credit recovery, and professional development. Its software helps to find and repair concept gaps using explicit instruction, supported practice, independent practice, and formative assessment. Its programs are based on more than 40 years of educational research. According to Michele Molnar of EdWeek’s Market Brief, the company serves more than 2 million students and 70,000 teachers in the US.

Together, they will be able to provide a full range of software for K-12 classrooms, they say.

Sari Factor, CEO of Edgenuity, said that the partnership will allow Edgenuity to support learners across the whole of their K-12 education:

“Quality education must start from day one and now is the right time for a provider that can span each critical stage of learning, from elementary to the middle grades to high school, and deliver improved student outcomes across the board. Edgenuity is the leader in courseware for grades 6-12 and Compass Learning has enjoyed a long history in the market for intervention and skills instruction in K-8 math, reading, and language arts. Together, we will address schools’ most critical needs across the K-12 spectrum.”

The Compass Learning brand will still be used, but Factor expects that it will be absorbed into the Edgenuity brand by 2017.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Edgenuity’s digital offerings include entire courses in various subjects for various grade levels, advanced placement courses, dual credit high school/university courses, career electives, career pathways, test preparation, math and reading intervention, state-specific courses, blended learning courses, on-demand tutoring, professional development, credit and concept recovery, career and technical education, special education, college-readiness courses for student athletes, programs for incarcerated youth, ESL instruction, and summer school courses.

Recently, Edgenuity was in the news after Mike Hubbard, Alabama’s former speaker of the house, was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison for felony ethics violations. He was accused of using his political clout to generate business for his own companies. Edgenuity was one of three businesses contracted with him.

Michael Humphrey, executive vice president at Edgenuity, testified that he hired Hubbard on a consulting contract at $ 7,500 per month to connect Edgenuity to other state leaders.
