Drew Barrymore’s delving back into the horror genre, as she’s currently working with the CW on an anthology called Black Rose Anthology.

According to Deadline, the series “will explore some of humanity’s deepest fears from a woman’s unique perspective. Classic themes of terror will be tackled via vignettes about guilt, jealousy, repression, paranoia, insanity, sexual obsession and survival through a modern and distinctly feminine lens.” It’s still super early, so there aren’t any other names to drop alongside this bit of news, aside from Jill Blotevogel (Scream: The Series), who’s writing the pilot episode.

Truth be told, judging by the description, the show sounds pretty fascinating. There have been plenty of great movies that have explored horror with more of a focus on the female perspective (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, It Follows, The Falling, The Babadook, The Invitation, and everything in the XX anthology, plus so many more). It’s been nice to see horror movies place the emphasis on women, whereas before, they were often there for titillation, catering mostly to the male gaze and serving as strange moral lessons regarding virginity, what with the ongoing trope of the Final Girl and all.

One hopes that with all of these excellent films, and with Black Rose Anthology, Barrymore might be able to help put that trope to bed once and for all.
