Disney Crossy Road is already the No. 1 downloaded app on iOS in the U.S.
Mickey is trying to cross the road … but there is no other side!
Disney Crossy Road debuted on iOS and Android on Wednesday night, and it is already the top downloaded game on iOS. Industry-tracking firm Sensor Tower explains to GamesBeat that if the road-crossing arcade-style game featuring Mickey Mouse and friends maintains that ranking, it should stay on track to reach 200,000 downloads every 24 hours. This is a big win for both Disney and developer Hipster Whale, which adapted its road-crossing mobile hit Crossy Road for this spinoff. This is also another example of how major media companies partner up with small mobile studios to combine film properties with popular mobile games to capture some revenue in the $ 34.8 billion mobile-gaming market. Disney previously did this with Temple Run: Brave that combined the beloved endless-running game with Pixar’s Brave universe.
For Hipster Whale, Disney Crossy Road represents months of secretive work, and now it is getting the opportunity to see those efforts pay off in a major way.
“Hipster Whale is known for being open with facts and figures, so keeping our collaboration with Disney quiet for a year has been nerve wracking,” Hipster Whale founder and director Matt Hall told GamesBeat. “So relieved to have it out and getting such a warm reception. And there’s plenty more to see in future updates.”

Disney Crossy Road is exactly what it’s name implies. It is a mashup of Disney characters and the road-crossing action of Crossy Road. You’ll start out with Mickey Mouse, but the game quickly begins unlocking other characters from properties like Big Hero 6 and Zootopia. And I’m betting we can expect some of the updates Hall is referring to might include characters and levels from the Marvel superhero movies and Star Wars.
