GROWING UP in Wallsend, near the shipyard, concentrated Sting’s mind on leaving it. “I felt trapped,” says the milkman’s son turned global star. “I always wanted to get out. They built a ship every year and we’d go to the launching, watching it drift off and never come back. It became a symbol of escape.”
