Sony Finds Director for Live Action Mulan in Game of Thrones‘ Alex Graves

While we’ve known about the Disney-led live action remake of Mulan for quite some time, it was a fairly recent revelation that Sony is also in the process of creating their own live action remake. Now, it seems that Sony’s taken a bit of a lead in the production race, having landed a director for their project. According to Deadline, Game of Thrones‘ Alex Graves will be helming the film. For some (read: most) of us, this news comes as kind of a bummer, to be honest. Whereas Disney seems to be doing the right thing by seeking out a Chinese director and an all-Chinese cast, Sony has gone in a completely opposite direction.

This isn’t to question Graves’ skill, but rather, it’s a questioning of where Sony’s been these past few weeks. Not too long ago an open letter to Disney found its way onto the Angry Asian Man blog, reacting to a leaked version of the early spec script. The script centered the story on a European man, essentially writing Mulan out of her own movie. This script, and the open letter responding to it, brought Disney and the movie’s development process into sharp focus. Shortly after, Disney reassured fans that they would do their best to find a Chinese director, as well as promising that the primary cast would be made up of Chinese actors as well.

Obviously we can’t make any judgement calls as to the quality of the movie because hey, this is just some director hiring news, but one thing’s for certain: sometimes, no matter how many waves you make over the internet about representation in front of and behind the camera, a studio will do whatever the heck it wants to do.
