How Star Wars: The Last Jedi Created the Colorful Battle of Crait

Star Wars: The Last Jedi brought viewers and fans into so many new worlds and environments, from the ancient temple and Luke’s hiding place on Ahch-To to the bright and busy planet of Cantonica. One of the most visually stunning, perhaps, was Crait. The mineral planet with an old Rebel Alliance outpost hosted the final confrontation of the film between the Resistance and the First Order. Being covered with a layer of white salt over its red-colored soil gave this event an incredible look as fighters flew across the terrain.

Just as exciting as these battles is the creativity and process behind building them, which is explored in The Last Jedi featurettes that will be available on the film’s bonus content. There is a lot of stuff blowing up, and you can see how much goes into making the land look like a the cracks you would see in a salt flat.

Another featurette talks about the design for the First order’s “gorilla” walker, which director Rian Johnson calls “our white whale.” The sketches and early animations are a lot of fun to watch, and gives you a whole new level of appreciation for the final product.

The Last Jedi is now available on Digital and Movies Anywhere and 4K UHD, and on Blu-ray March 27th.
